How to Read a Map

Activity 1: Practise your map skills with this activity on-line. Then answer this question.

  • What is a map?

Activity 2: Now learn about the elements of the map. First, the points of a compass:

  • What rhyme can you use to remember the points of a compass?

 

Activity 3: Now practice with the grid references.

  • What is a grid reference useful for?


Activity 4: Finally, complete this activity about symbols and keys. Then, draw five of the symbols shown on the website with their meanings in your notebook.

Now let’s listen to a song to remember what you know about the elements of a map.
